Improving Toolbar Customization for Enhanced User Experience

Hello,

I’d like to propose an improvement for the toolbar customization feature in LibreOffice. While the current customization options are functional; I believe there’s potential to make the process more intuitive and efficient, especially for new users or those aiming for a streamlined workflow. Currently, the process of customizing toolbars can be a bit overwhelming for less technical users; as it requires navigating through menus and dialogs. :slightly_smiling_face:

This can lead to cluttered toolbars with icons that aren’t necessarily useful for the task at hand, making it harder to find the tools needed quickly.

To address this; I suggest the addition of dynamic, task-specific toolbars that adjust based on the type of document you’re working on. For example, when working in a spreadsheet, the toolbar could prioritize tools related to formulas or data analysis, while minimizing irrelevant options. :thinking:Additionally; a drag-and-drop interface for customizing the toolbar would make the process more intuitive, allowing users to visually arrange icons with ease. Another helpful feature would be the ability to save and share customized toolbar layouts, so users can easily replicate or distribute their optimized workflows. These changes would not only help improve productivity but also make the software more accessible for users at all levels. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this and whether there are other customization features you’d like to see implemented in the future. :slightly_smiling_face:

I suggest the addition of dynamic, task-specific toolbars that adjust based on the type of document you’re working on…

You can do that by using the document as “Scope” and saving as template.

For example, when working in a spreadsheet, the toolbar could prioritize tools related to formulas or data analysis…

Doesn’t it work like this? Or what exactly do you mean with toolbar? We show/hide classic toolbars depending on the context - which always has drawn criticism due to the sudden changes of the UI. Therefore the static toolbars are supposed to present the most frequently used functions.

Additionally; a drag-and-drop interface for customizing the toolbar would make the process more intuitive…

You probably have Firefox/Thunderbird in mind that let users drag an icon onto the UI after switching into some edit mode. Definitely a nice solution - in particular for a low number of items. But with the vast amount of functions I’m not so sure this would be a good solution. And is it really easier to use?

Another helpful feature would be the ability to save and share customized toolbar layouts…

Absolutely yes, besides the mentioned templates procedure. We have 120132 – Make menus extensionizable for this and bug 120160 as well as bug 52387 both tagged as duplicate to the similar request 120719 – tools -> options ability to backup and restore user options and customizations, reuse the profile export / restore from SafeModeDialog.
