Getting Starting Guide - Differents Print dialogbox in macOS

The Spanish documentation team is updating the 24.8 getting started guide in its Spanish version.

I have a virtual machine running macOS Catalina for the screenshots.
The Print dialogbox related to macOS from the English guide - Getting Starting, Chapter 1, L.O. Basic
Is different from the one that appear in my virtual machine

  • I don’t know if this difference in the dialogbox is due to my printer driver or because the figures in the guide has not been updated.

Can someone with a macOS confirm how the print dialogbox (FIle > Print) appears in macOS?

Dialogbox in my macOS virtual machine

Hello Antonio

Attached is the sane screen shot from macOS for my MacMini that is running macOS Sequoia 15.0.1 and LibreOffice 28.2. It is taken from LibreOffice Draw. LibreOffice Impress is similar.

Thanks, Peter.

Although I have installed another printer, the dialog still appears quite different from the one in my system and that I see in your screenshot and in the documentation.

I understand that the difference in the dialog is not due to the Printer drivers and may be due to differences in the builds for macOS Intel and for macOS Apple Silicon.

  • I think this difference can be a problem that can confuse the user and should be noted in the documentation.

However, I will report the issue on the projects forum in case they can unify the rendering of this dialog.

Thanks, Peter.

Report:

Hello Antonio

The print dialogs do depend on computer operating system, computer setup and the printer connected to the computer. I use the following text in a Note at the beginning of the print chapter in the Impress and Draw user guides.

"Due to the several methods a computer can be setup and used, the print dialog that opens when printing LibreOffice documents may differ from the print dialogs used in this chapter.”

Actually, reading this Note again, I will be updating to include computer operating system.

Peter

I agree that the operating system can change the presentation of the dialogs (colors, borders or shape of the dialog controls) and that the installed printer can change its configuration options in the dialog.

In Windows and Linux the layout of the dialogs is practically the same, with slight differences in controls.

I think that such a drastic change in the layout of the controls within the same dialog may be due to a different module in the LibreOffice compilation for the two macOS systems.

I hope the development team checks it and if possible unifies it.

Hello Antonio

I agree. The dialogs for each operating should be very similar, but this may not be possible. macOS does uses different actions for some operations and I think this due to different architecture used in Apple computers.

I am not saying that the dialogue must be unified on all operating systems, I understand that this is not possible.

What I suggest is that the dialog be unified in the two variants of macOS

Not sure what you mean by two variants of macOS. I have been using macOS for a very long time and it has been the only variant I know of. The only variations I know are the differences between macOS, iPadOS and iPhoneOS.

Yes, there are variations in the LibreOffice dialogs, but this has been caused by the changes to LibreOffice when new versions are published.

There is a LibreOffice build for macOS on computers with an Intel processor
and there is another build for macOS with Apple Silicon processors.

  • Your macMini has this last processor and in your system information you will see that you have an M4, M4 Pro or similar processor

These are the main variants of MAC computers

My screenshot is taken with version 24.8 Intel processor
Your screenshot is taken with version 24.8 Apple Silicon processor (I think)

The same versions on two macOS computers.

Hello Antonio

I have both processors - Mac Mini is Intel and MacBook Air is Apple M1. There is no difference in the dialogs for LibreOffice.

PeeWee

So I don’t know what the difference is between the dialogues in your screenshot and mine.

  • Maybe someone else with a Mac can provide us with screenshots of the print dialog of version 24 of LibreOffice.

Hello Antonio

There are screen shots in IG24810-SlideShowsPrintEmailExport.odt and DG24810-PrintExportEmail.odt of the Mac dialogs.
These screenshots are only examples. Different printer setup will produce different screenshots.

It seems quite strange to me.

I have 3 printers installed on my macOS Catalina machine.

  • They all show the same print dialog, which is the same as the screenshots in the Writer guide
  • And different from the screenshots in the Getting Started , Draw and Impress guides.

I know that printer manufacturers create their own printing programs and they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer.
But applications create their own dialogs that communicate with the printer drivers.

  • Application dialogs do not change even if the printer is different (unless changed in application version updates)
