Documenting keyboard shortcuts

Hi!

I recently faced the problem of adding a paragraph before an existing table on top of a text document. I got the Writer Guide, chapter on keyboard shortcuts.

However, how to find the proper shortcut in a list of hundreds? Shortcuts are listed by keys in first column and actions on the second. To get the desired shortcut action I had to traverse the second column…

In summary: the second column is not ordered by action.

So I invite team members to rewrite the keyboard shortcut chapters by action instead of keys.

In Writer, list actions divided by document objects. For example

Action: Insert

  • in sections
  • in tables
  • pages
  • paragraphs
  • characters
  • frames, images
  • Styles

Action: Select

  • in table
  • in paragraphs
  • characters, words, end-of line, etc…

Action: Delete

  • In tables
  • sections

Action: Move

  • in tables
  • paragraphs
  • images

Action : View

  • Zoom
  • outline
  • print preview
  • Sidebar/nvavigator

and so on…

Reordering the shortcuts will also be reused in the Help of LibreOffice.

Cheers
Olivier

Hello Olivier

Good thinking. Definitely needs improving the information for keyboard shortcuts.

Putting action first, then the keyboard shortcut is a good starting point.

Thinking cap is on and will ponder on a new layout for the Impress and Draw appendices…

Suggested New Layout Keyboard Shortcuts.odt (126 KB)

Hi @PeeWee
Yes, this is a step in the right direction.

I think the action can be less verbose, e.g.

File actions/commands

  • New File

  • New file with template

  • etc…

I like the single table for macOS and Win/Unix. Less pages to print or translate.

I like the action verb ordered alphabetically.

One remark: IMHO, the shortcut sections separated by heading, should not be the copy of the menu bar entries, but a more “natural” use of the suite.

For example, I imagine “How do I select a shape?” The Select action will apply to many objects and is not a transposition of the menu (since there is no Select entry in main menu). It will require a good thinking of the layout of the chapter for greater effectiveness.

Cheers
Olivier.

Hi, Olivier!

I would also add the Common Keyboards, those that are under the LibreOffice tab (not for every module: Calc, Writer, etc) at the end of the listing in each guide.

New Layout Keyboard Shortcuts 02.odt (126 KB)

Hello Olivier

Attached a suggestion for Appendix A Keyboard Shortcuts for LO Draw 25.8.

Language used is more direct and I think asking How To questions are not necessary.

Please let me know what you think.
