Hello Olivier

May not attend a meeting, but do have a suggestion for an amendment to the user guides.

The problem is using a scanner directly from LibreOffice as reported in bug 141507. You can access a scanner from LibreOffice, but only in the Windows version.

macOS version of LibreOffice does not have scanner access because macOS uses the Preview application and this cancels any LibreOffice direct access to a scanner.

Windows version of LibreOffice does have scanner access, but that is limited by the age of the scanner. Some scanners are no longer supported by the manufacturer, for example Canon. This means you can no longer use a propriety scanner application from the scanner manufacturer.

Old scanners can operate using freely available 3rd party applications, but operating through LibreOffice does not work. I have a multi-function printer and a very old flatbed scanner. My flatbed scanner does work using VueScan, but not through LibreOffice.

My suggestion is to remove any references to scanning from the LibreOffice user guides. It is easy enough to scan images or text using scanning software, then import the file into LibreOffice.

What are your views on Bug 141507 and my solution with the user guides.

Regards
PeeWee

I agree with @peewee that references to scanning directly from LO should be removed from the user guides.

Hello Olivier

The published and PDF files for the Impress Guide 25.2 are now available on NextCloud.

Now for the Draw Guide update to 25.2.

Hi @PeeWee

I’m not comfortable to remove it totally because the scanning procedure works in my installation (Linux Kubuntu 24.10), with a scanner (EPSON L4160) in my home network.

Version: 25.2.0.3 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: e1cf4a87eb02d755bce1a01209907ea5ddc8f069
CPU threads: 12; OS: Linux 6.11; UI render: default; VCL: kf5 (cairo+wayland)
Locale: pt-BR (pt_BR.UTF-8); UI: pt-BR
Calc: threaded

If the issue is in macOS and there is a workaround to scan and import into LibreOffice, the text should be modified with this caveat.

If I recall, LibreOffice uses standard Windows framework for scanners (TWAIN) and Linux uses equivalent framework (SANE).

Hello Olivier

I have been testing this scanner problem to see if there is a solution. I think using a scanner directly from LibreOffice is not necessary. It is just as easy to a scanner app and import the file into LibreOffice. Also there is a problem with the newer versions of Windows and macOS for scanners.

I have an old Canon flatbed scanner which used to work OK. However, Canon are no longer supporting the software drivers for old scanners in the newer versions of Windows and macOS. This means that my old Canon scanner is not displayed as an available source in LibreOffice. However, I can still scan with the Canon flatbed by using the 3rd party application VueScan, or OCR software. I then import the resulting file from scanning into LibreOffice.

I am sure that I am not the only LibreOffice user with this problem. This why I have suggested that the scanning option directly from LibreOffice is deleted. I also recommended this as a comment in Bug 141507. When I read through the comments on this bug it appears to me that solving the bug by changing the coding is very difficult and time consuming.
