Hi, international community, it’s time to talk about 2024.
Some news from France and the French-speaking world in the european space.
In France, as you probably know, opensource is widely used. The market of opensource is valued at more than €6.4 billion, 10 % of the total french IT market. More than 64,000 employees will be working in opensource (by 2022).
Office solutions including LibreOffice and CollaboraOnline are of course widely deployed although we still face a strong proprietary competitor.
There are numerous opensource events for professionals and the general public, focusing on different targets like developers, devops and free software users.
Over the last few years, in order to promote free office software and LibreOffice , we have selected a number of events, see location map and the table below this post.
We often have a booth and propose a talk about LibreOffice, Nextcloud+Collabora, sometimes we are just attendees.
The “Capitole du libre” in Toulouse (Capitol of free software) takes place every year, and we have given several talks there, with over 1,200 visitors. (capitoledulibre.org)
Les “journées du logiciel libre” (free software days - jdll.org) takes place in Lyon and is also a major event.
“Campus du libre” (foss Campus) is a student event associated with Lyon 2 University. (www.campus-du-libre.org)
Les “rencontres amicales francophone du logiciel libre” ( friendly french speaking free software meeting) is a recent event to be developed in Montpellier in the south of France, run by the Montpel’libre association (rafll.org).
Parinux-PSL XXL (www.samedis-du-libre.org/) is another recent public event in Paris.
Lastly, Opensource Expérience in Paris is a professional event , with its own users village (www.opensource-experience.com/en).
To meet a different audience not accustomed to free software, we also go to the Primevère fair, which is a meeting place on the theme of ecology and social alternatives, in Lyon
Then there’s the “fête de l’humanité”, (humanity festival) a musical, popular and political festival, the annual meeting and largest meeting place for the left-wing of French politics, with 450,000 visitors. (Fête de l'Humanité - Wikipedia)
In the French-speaking world, we work closely with a local association for historical raison, La Mouette (lamouette.org), which helps french community with responsive administrative, IT and (little) financial support and brings together volunteers interested in free office software.)
We are also developing links and friendship with other free software associations. We visited Swisslinux in Switzerland at “hivernale du libre” (Winter of free software) and of course FOSDEM in Bruxelles.
We were attendees at Libocon in Luxembourg also.
Another article coming soon! Stay tuned!

Thanks to all La Mouette team and all people we met in 2024.
