Graphics vanishing

Let's try an experiment. I have put a copy of that file on the
ODFAuthors website, here:
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/impress-guide/draft-lo3.4
(BTW, I have no idea when I got that copy of the file and whether it
was downloaded from Alfresco or not. My copy is probably the one that
was published back in July.)

You should be able to download it without having an account on that
website, but let me know if that doesn't work. (Most drafts are set
to be invisible to people without accounts, but I "published" this one
to make it accessible.)

You will not be able to upload any files without having an account.
Let me know if you want me to create an account for you.

Another experiment: download the file from the LO wiki and see if that
copy misbehaves as well.

The results of these experiments will not prove anything, but they
might give us some further clues as to what's going on. If several
people try these, that will give us more data points.

Hi Jean

Both worked ok for me Jean and I made some change and saved and the file size did not change and opened OK after saving changes. But I have never used Alfresco and do not have an account to try any from there.

Hi
Are there still quite a few people familiar with ODFauthors as well as being able to login to Alfresco?  Is anyone checking to make sure the updated documents are shared with them?  If only 1 or 2 people use ODFauthors then there is not much point.  I think Jean has kept an eye on it.

Tom,

To date, we (the English LO docs team) have used ODFAuthors only for
testing or unusual situations. I have not attempted to keep the LO
docs on ODFAuthors updated to match Alfresco; Alfresco remains the
definitive source. We could, of course, choose to change this
arrangement.

Most of the "old timers" from OOo have accounts in both places. Most
of the newcomers do not have ODFAuthors accounts, AFAIK.

Hello Jean

Downloaded the file OK and all the graphics are in place. Now to create a working copy and continue updating the chapter.

This missing graphics problem has got me puzzled and not knowing how the Alfresco system works does not help in thinking of solution.

Not sure if the way I work has an influence. I use Dropbox to pass files between computers at home as it is very quick and easy to use. Could Dropbox have some effect on the graphic files. I do copy the graphic PNG files into the Write document, then save the Write document directly to Dropbox.

I think the next upload to the Repository will be directly from my Desktop on my iMac to see if that creates any problems.

Regards

Peter

Hi
I doubt it's due to drop-box.  The problem is written-up a in a bug-report from years ago.  Hopefully the code-cleaning might help fix some of the causes.

If that were so, surely the problem would appear in OpenOffice.org as well. I used OOo for quite a while to edit user guides and I don't remember ever seeing graphics disappearing like this.

It happened to me occasionally with OOo.

Hi
The bug-report about the issue
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=59915
was filed in 2005.

Maybe it was just good luck or something that prevented it happening to
Hazel in OOo. There seems to have been a lot of trouble pin-pointing the
causes of the intermittent problem so it's not likely to be something we can
solve in this thread. It is also not appearing in the Users List a lot so
not many other people are having the trouble - or at least they are not
grumbling about it. It's just very frustrating for people that work hard
and then find problems occurring that they have no control over and were not
their fault. Still, you seem to have found a good way of minimising the
damage now.

Hi.
I have had graphics disappearing in Openoffice from very early in its development. Seems a lingering problem that is hard to put a finger on.
